Merced Unit 3: Probationary Employees Benefit from Union Representation

Probationary employees are often confused about whether they can or should join the union. The answer to both questions is yes! Probationary employees can join UPE, and when they do, they are entitled to union representation. Often, new workers feel like there is no benefit to union representation. This simply isn’t true. An employee’s probationary period is a critical timeframe. You are learning the job, new systems, how to manage the clientele, and understanding department structure and your rights as an employee. Probationary employees are covered under our contract and are entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees. For example, probationary employees would receive the recently negotiated salary increases and are entitled to vacation accruals and mileage reimbursement when applicable, to name a few.

You can find your contract on our UPE website and the County website. However, if you have questions or want to discuss a specific issue, we encourage you to call your Business Agent. Calls are confidential unless there is a need to address an individualized matter. Your voice is important, so don’t be afraid to reach out.
