DHA: General Assistance Pause

Greetings, Union sisters and brothers. On November 1, 2024, your 005/008 bargaining team met with DHA management regarding their sudden plan to temporarily shut down services to General Assistance (GA) applicants and recipients. We asked for an explanation, and their answer indicated they were taken by surprise by County funding priorities, an explanation viewed with extreme doubt by your team.

Employee safety and fairness issues were brought up forcefully by your team, but management was dismissive, stating repeatedly that the GA shutdown was only for several weeks. But then, they let out information that they plan to permanently reduce GA staff to only four (4) workers, who would do GA only; the change will take effect January 26, 2025. That was a shocker. Obviously, there will be more meetings. Stay tuned!

UPE thanks governing board members James Starr, Nichole Gorman, Stephanie McCall and Jennifer Avalo for their participation and advocacy.
