On January 14, 2025, UPE met with the Department of Airports to discuss new security screening procedures. Screening previously conducted by the TSA will be handled by the Department of Airports' third-party security, hired by the Department. This will involve screening procedures similar to those used by the TSA, including thorough pat-downs, handheld wand screenings, and swab tests for explosive detection on both hands and personal items.
To help you prepare, a comprehensive list of permitted and prohibited items will be shared with all staff to ensure everyone understands what can be brought into the airport. The Department wants to reassure you that they do not expect these new screening measures to disrupt or delay employee schedules.
If you accidentally bring a prohibited item to the screening, you will have the option to either dispose of it or return it to your vehicle, unless the item is illegal under state law, in which case law enforcement will be contacted. We also recognize the importance of privacy during screening. If you prefer a private pat-down, you can request this or opt for a public screening area that is not designated for co-workers.
While the Department initially aimed to implement these changes in February, the rollout is now expected to occur in March. Lastly, in case a swab test indicates a false positive, law enforcement will only be called if an illegal item is found. You will have the opportunity to explain any triggers, such as if a false positive was triggered by items such as ChapStick.
