On July 22, 2025, United Public Employees (UPE) met with Sacramento Superior Courts management at the Carol Miller Justice Center to discuss the implementation of 22 new duties for Courtroom Clerks. UPE and its members objected to these additional duties being placed on clerks. The Court responded by stating that these assignments fall within the existing job classification and justified the change by pointing to a reduction in backlogs, which they said has been a benefit of the new system.
The Court confirmed that training will be provided before clerks are expected to carry out the new tasks. Out of the 22 duties, six may be performed inside the courtroom-by-Courtroom Clerks. Some of the responsibilities being added include processing ex parte applications to post notices, preparing rulings on submitted matters, issuing bench warrants, handling declarations of non-compliance, processing requests to postpone trials, managing proposed judgments after trial, preparing stipulations and orders, handling affidavits of identity, and working with satisfaction of judgment filings.
The Court indicated that some of these responsibilities were previously done under the old case management system or are being resumed under the updated eCourt system. Notably, the Court assured UPE that clerks will be supported throughout this transition, with training and a fair process in place.
UPE will continue to monitor the rollout of these duties and speak up on behalf of members. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the UPE Business Agent.
