UPE met and conferred with representatives from the Coroner's Office on October 7, 2025, over their plan to add security cameras to the lobby and property room. Two cameras are planned for the lobby. One providing coverage of the entrance and front counter, and another placed over the badge door facing back to the front counter. They also plan to install one camera in the property room, which is a state requirement.

UPE clarified with the Department that the purpose of the cameras is to increase security and safety, particularly given recent incidents with members of the public. The cameras will help the Department better identify what happens during incidents. UPE confirmed the cameras will not be actively monitored but can be reviewed after the fact if necessary. UPE staff will not be responsible in any way for the cameras. The Coroner's office also stated they are in the process of remodeling the front counter area to provide additional room for staff and increase security by providing both bulletproof glass and paneling.

The cameras do not have an installation date yet, but the Department plans to install them as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your UPE Business Agent, Carlos Alcala, at 916-736-9503 or alcala@upe1.org
