United Public Employees (UPE) met with the Court on September 17, 2025, regarding the Court’s proposal to discontinue four public copy machines at the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse (FRC).
The Court has decided to remove four out of five public copy machines. The only remaining public copy machine will be located in the public lounge at FRC. According to the Court, this decision was made after concerns were raised about staff having to leave secure work areas to assist the public with copy machine issues. Instead of public machines, the Court will now rely on Government Code Section 70627, which allows the Court to charge 50 cents per page for copies prepared by the front desk clerks.
The Court assured UPE that employees will not be asked to assist the public with the new copy machine in the public lounge. However, UPE raised concerns that the front counters could see an increase in requests for copies, and we will be monitoring this closely. The courts informed UPE copy machines for staff have been upgraded to make copying easier.
UPE will continue to protect your rights. Please reach out to your steward or business agent if you experience issues related to this new policy.
UPE WOULD LIKE TO THANK COT GOVERNING BOARD MEMBERS ANDREA HOWARD, JULIE VALDIVIA, TAMMI BOXER AND SHAWN BOXER FOR THEIR ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT.
