What is a “Breakout”? It’s a demonstration in support of a fair contract, done on your break or lunch hour outside your building. A “Breakout” is a show of the commitment and resolve of the 008 UPE members. It shows the County we are serious about fighting for a fair contract. “
What should I wear? RED!
Should we carry signs? YES.
Where should we go when we “break out”? Gather wherever you can be seen by management or the public. If there is a street nearby with a lot of traffic, go there and march up and down the sidewalk carrying signs and signaling motorists to honk their horns in support.
How long should the “Breakout” last? At this time, no one should stay out longer than their lunch hour. And because that limits our “Breakout” time, it’s very important that everyone at your site should leave together and come back together to show our unity.
Can I get in trouble for “Breaking out?” No, this is a legally protected activity, and this occurs during your lunchtime. Even Probationary workers have a legally protected right to engage in this union activity.
Can my supervisor or PM order me not to “breakout”? NO. Because then they would have to order you not to take a lunch break.
