005 Meet & Confer Update

DHS, Division of Public Health Moves Forward With Attire Guidelines

On May 16, 2019, UPE and the County met over the Division of Public Health's desire to implement an "Attire Guideline" for its workers. Originally, the Department called the guidelines, "Appearance Standards". This was the first of UPE'S objections. We asked if anyone attending possessed a degree in fashion and design. This proved that there were no experts at the meeting to define what is an "acceptable appearance" and that only opinions were being discussed. We then asked if there were any complaints. Perhaps this was the reason that this subject needed reviewing. There were no complaints from any clients.

One of the other issues listed on the guidelines is nail length. We were advised that this pertains mostly to the nursing staff due to state guidelines over cleanliness and health. The other items listed included: shoes, skirt lengths, revealing attire, logos, hats, and tights vs. leggings, which are typical topics in dress guidelines across the County. The department and County advised during the discussion that exceptions will be made for medical purposes on a case-by-case basis.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to allow UPE the chance to review corrections before presented for implementation. We have since received the corrected version and noted no other issues of concern or anything outside of the normal dress guidelines across the County.

Special thanks and shout out to the Job Steward Diane Dolce, and Board Member Dawn Richardson, who participated in this meet and confer.
